UPDATE: It WAS my monitor and not my graphics drivers after all! After about 10 hours of troubleshooting and digging through documentation and forums I figured out it was my monitors EDID information causing the problems. ii nvidia-settings 361.42-0ubuntu1 amd64 Tool for configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver And, when i get to the All Settings>Details it show 'Graphics Unknown' I already updated my Additional driver to the 'nvidia-361 - distro non-free recommended' witch is a proprietary, tested driver but nothing changed. XP drivers from the motherboard, it still shows an unknown audio device on.

If there's a way I could get a similar Linux compatible driver installed I have a feeling that would fix my problem but I have no idea how to go about this. Im trying to install NVIDIA 820M, but Ubuntu only accepts the alternative driver If I try to install the proprietary, I receive a black screen and have to purge the driver to get the GUI back Ive tried the NVIDIA-Linux-x8664-430.40. Enabling on-board graphics on an AsRock board when you have a GPU installed.

The system runs a Ubuntu 17.10 Linux OS (Kernel version 4.13). In windows it says the driver for my monitor, which displays as a "generic non-pnp" monitor, is provided by Microsoft. The GPU accelerator is equipped with 16 GB of graphics memory and is connected via PCI. I don't have any integrated graphics and I'm not convinced it's a graphic driver issue, I'm almost certain it has to do with my monitor and the fact that Linux can't seem to figure out that it's even capable of 1080p. So think the issue is likely to do with the nvidia driver though i am not a linux expert though have played around with it in the past But even when it showed my monitor as unknown display i could get 1080p
